What is the project about?
What is educational health and safety (ESG)?
It is the primary education dimension of occupational health and safety (OHS). It refers to protecting children from all kinds of risky situations on the way to school, inside the school and around the school — the adult concept of OHS adapted to primary school level.
What does augmented reality (AR) mean?
It means adding virtual objects (3D models, animations, simulations) on top of the real-world camera view. Unlike virtual reality, the student is not cut off from their surroundings: they stand in the classroom and, looking through the tablet, see a fire simulation on the real electrical panel.
What is the REACT strategy?
A context-based teaching strategy consisting of Relating, Experiencing, Applying, Cooperating and Transferring. It builds learning within a real-life context; it originates from vocational education, which makes it well suited to the nature of OHS.
What is a marker?
A special visual pattern that the AR application can recognise. It is handed out to students on paper or attached to the relevant place in the school (electrical panel, fire extinguisher, garden gate). When the tablet camera sees the pattern, the related AR content starts.
Can I use it in my classroom?
Is the module available now?
Not yet. The module is in the development and pilot implementation stage. Once the project is complete, the teacher handbook and AR markers will be downloadable from this website as open access, and the mobile application will be published on the app stores. The module will also be shared through the Education Information Network (EBA).
Will there be a fee?
No. As the project is funded from public resources (TÜBİTAK), all outputs will be shared free of charge and as open access.
Which grade levels?
It is designed for 3rd and 4th grade primary school students. First and second grades are excluded because their reading–writing skills and experience with tests and scales are not yet sufficiently developed.
How long does it take?
The module consists of at least six activities, each covering two lesson hours per week. The experimental implementation lasts a total of six weeks.
What device is needed?
A tablet with a camera is sufficient. To keep conditions identical for all students, the experimental implementation uses 30 tablets with the same technical specifications provided by the project. Teachers applying the module in their own classrooms can use their school’s tablets.
Is an internet connection required?
The AR content is bundled inside the application, so a constant connection is not needed during the activity. A connection is required for the initial installation of the app and its content.
Is teacher training provided?
Yes. Classroom teachers who will carry out the experimental implementation receive training in two sessions of 45 minutes each beforehand, covering ESG topics, an introduction to the module and the use of the handbook and markers.

Is consent required?
Yes. Participation in the experimental implementation is voluntary; in addition to school and provincial directorate of national education permissions, parental consent is obtained.

Is it safe for children?
That is precisely the purpose of the module: it allows genuinely dangerous situations such as fire, electricity and chemicals to be experienced safely in a virtual environment. No activity involves contact with a real hazard.
